1 . What do I need before I start to drive?
The main thing you will need is a Provisional Driving License issued by the DVLA. You may apply for this online though their website or at the Post office. You will be required to bring your license to the first lesson. One other basic requirement is that you are able to read a new style car registration plate from a distance of 20 meters and if you require glasses or contact lenses to do this, you must wear them whilst driving.

If you wish to practise in your own vehicle, you will need to make sure you are fully insured, displaying 'L' plates and being supervised by someone aged over 21, holding a full driving licence for over 3 years.
2 . Do you have other students in the car whilst I'm learning?
No, all your lessons will last for a full hour and be completely individual
3 . Can I use your car for taking a test without taking lessons with you?
No, we do not allow this.
4 . How much Notice am I required to give for cancelling a lesson?
48 hours notice is required for cancelling a lesson (except in extreme circumstances) otherwise a cancellation fee is payable.
5 . How long will it take me to learn to drive?
There is no set number of lessons and as an estimate, the Driving Standards Agency have calculated an average of 45 hours tuition combined with 22 hours private practice.
6 . Why should I choose you over a large company?
Many pupils believe that by going with a larger company they are likely to get a more qualified instructor. Alan is a fully qualified driving instructor with over 25 years experience teaching in the Swindon area. Keeping up to date with changes in the driving system, Alan is able to offer a professional and reliable tuition which many new instructors may not. Many larger companies also have a number of trainee instructors and you are not always guaranteed the continuity of having the same instructor throughout your training.

Being a small company, with a good reputation to keep, Modern Driving Techniques are able to offer individual tuition to suit all needs and Alan is very easy to get on with, which many initially nervous pupils find particularly reassuring.

Modern Driving Techniques also have the added benefit over many smaller driving schools that even in the rare occurrence of a car breaking down, another one with similar features is immediately available.
7 . What area do you cover?
Modern Driving Techniques covers most of Swindon, with the majority of pupils based in West Swindon. Please click here to view a guideline map as to the areas covered. If you live just outside the areas indicated on the map and work, attend college or similar within the Swindon area, you may still be able to learn with Modern Driving Techniques. Please contact us for more information.
8 . How often should I have a lesson?
We recommend you have a lesson at least once a week to keep what you have learnt fresh in your mind. Pupils can (and many do) have more that this, especially leading up to their test.
9 . Do you do refresher lessons?
Yes, refresher lessons are available to suit individual needs. Please contact us for more information.
10 . Do you do motorway tuition?
Yes, motorway lessons are available. Please contact us for more information.
11 . Do you do Intensive courses?
No, unfortunately we do not offer fully intensive courses; we may however be able to offer a semi-intensive option consisting of several hours per week. Please contact us for more information.

Alan does not consider intensive training as the best way to learn. Weekly lessons allows pupils to cover a wider variety of learning scenarios including variations in the weather conditions. Intensive training can also be stressful for certain pupils, creating unsafe driving, and a reduction in concentration.
12 . Do you do assessment lessons?
Yes we can offer an assessment lessons if required. Please contact us for more information.
13 . Do you do gift vouchers?
Yes, gift vouchers are available to buy, we hope to add this as a new feature to the website in the future however, until then, please contact us for more information.
14 . Do you have a mobile number I can contact you on?
No, using a hand held mobile phone whilst driving or supervising a driver with a provisional license is an illegal offence and even using a hands free device can be distracting and interrupt lessons. If you need to get in contact, please use the land-line number (shown in the header) where messages can be regularly passed on to Alan.
